  • Year 8 Update- Summer 2

    Published 15/07/22

I started my first assembly back this year speaking with the Year 8s about how proud of their Year 7 journey were. I set them the challenge of ensuring that, by the end of Year 8, I still stood in the assembly telling them how proud I was of them. Year 8 have definitely done this! Students met another challenge this year with returning to school for a full year. It has been wonderful to see lots of students make the most of opportunities that they were less able to last year, including extra-curricular opportunities and leadership roles.

It has been an exciting term for Year 8 students as they prepare to start their KS4 options and take part in a range of whole-school activities.

    Celebration Evening

It was brilliant to have our annual Celebration Evening face to face for the first time in three years.  500 students were nominated across the school and all nominated students received an R4. Students were short-listed for both Year Group Awards and Whole School awards.

The Year 8 runners up and winners are:

    Year 8 CORE Award

Runners Up – Naomi M, Miles M and David S-C
    Winner – Katie C

    Year 8 Humanities Award

Runners Up – Chloe M, Noah T and Claudia Craig
    Winner – Katie C

    Year 8 Performance Award

Runners Up – Naomi M, Miles M and David S-C
    Winner – Katie C

    Year 8 IEN Award

Runners Up – Andrew N, Jemma K and Courtney H

    Year 8 Sports Personality
    Winners – Daisy G and Archie L

    Year 8 Year Group Award

Runners Up – Emily A, Teagan S and Martin S
    Winner – Daisy G

Well done to all students nominated, particularly the winners!

    Celebration Rewards Event

On Monday 18 July, 50 Year 8 students took part in a Rewards Celebration Event due to them being in the top 50 students in Year 8. We hired sumo suits, an assault course and a bungee run and we were so excited to celebrate these fantastic students!

    Options

All parents/carers should now have received their child's option choices. Please email data@northleamington.co.uk if this is not the case.

    Big Bang Trip

We were so proud of how our Year 8 students conducted themselves at the Big Bang Fair in June. There was lots of on offer for students to see and they really made the most of this opportunity! Well done for representing NLS so well!

    Pride

To celebrate Pride Month, students were invited to wear rainbow accessories in order to support and celebrate Pride at NLS and to raise money for Pride. The Year 8 team were so impressed with the efforts of our Year 8 students, particularly those who attend Pride club and supported with the event.

    Student Leadership

The standard of leadership in Year 8 has been extremely high this year. Our Rewards Leaders have been a fantastic support when it came to organising the three Celebration Events for students across the year. These students demonstrated excellent leadership and teamwork in order to make these events a success.

Our International School Leaders have worked incredibly hard over the last week, supporting with a project with Year 5 students from local primary schools. The staff working on this said they had never seen such a high standard of leadership. The students are being rewarded with a hot chocolate celebration in the final week of term. We are really proud of their achievements!

Next year, Year 9 will be both Marketing and Charity and Community Leaders and we are really looking forward to seeing our students leadership develop even more.

    Sports Day

It was incredible to have the whole school back together for Sports Day this year! It was fantastic to see the ethos of our college system, with students in their college groups throughout the day. In the morning, students competed in a range of team sports. In the afternoon saw the athletics and tug of war. It was an extremely exciting (and tense!) afternoon and we are proud of our Year 8 Manor students for keeping their title as winner of Sports Day!

    Race for Life

On Wednesday, Year 8 students will be running the Race for Life to raise money for Cancer Research. We are really looking forward to another whole-school event and seeing how much both Year 8, and the rest of the school, can raise!

    College Logo Competition

Thank you and have a wonderful Summer!

On the whole, the students continue to work hard, present smartly in their uniform, are punctual and show kindness to one another. The Year 8 tutors have been extremely supportive of the students this year and for this I would like to say a huge thank you for their efforts. I would like to say a particular thank you to Miss Blythe, who is leaving us at the end of this school year. She has been a fantastic tutor to 8CT01 and we wish her luck in her next journey. I would also like to thank both Miss Lloyd and Mr Kandola, who will remain in school next year but are taking on different roles. We really appreciate their efforts with 8BD02 and 8PK01. The pastoral support that they have offered each day has enabled students to feel safe and settled.

Thank you to parents and carers for your continued support. Over the last year, it has been wonderful to meet so many of you face to face and I am really looking forward to continuing to lead the Year 8s in to Year 9.

On behalf of the Year 8 team, I would like to wish you a wonderful summer with your families and we look forward to seeing the students on their return to school in September.

    Miss Murphy

  • Year 9 Update- Summer 2

    Published 15/07/22

As we approach the end of an eventful and demanding year, it is a great opportunity to reflect on the year and celebrate the accomplishments of Year 9 students. With the disruption of the global pandemic, firstly I feel it is important to recognise just how well students have done this year, considering that the last time their school year was not interrupted was in Year 6 at primary school! It has been a pleasure to observe and hear of how students have displayed superb levels of maturity, determination and perseverance, which has allowed them to progress not just academically, but personally too.

    Celebration Awards Evening

It was a real delight to present a number of Year 9 students with a range of awards at the recent Celebration Awards Evening. Prior to the event, all staff were asked to identify and nominate students for outstanding efforts in the classroom and contributions to the wider school community. In total, 87 students were nominated for a variety of reasons such as: excellent leadership and initiatives being displayed, superb progress made in GCSE subjects, and exemplary attitudes being shown in all aspects of school life.  It was a privilege to recognise an extra-special, standout group of Year 9 students, with the following winners and runners up:

    Student Leadership

I would like to extend a big ‘thank you’ and ‘well done’ to each and every one of the Year 9 student leaders: you have been amazing to work with and I am so grateful for all of your efforts this year. Events such as the Race for Life, NLS Does X Factor, The Queen’s Jubilee Bunting Competition and Bake Off, the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal, and the daily litter picking initiative would not have happened without you. It has been brilliant to see you show initiative and how you have developed key skills such as creativity, confidence, empathy and communication.

Student Leaders not present: Emily B, Rylee B, and Charlie P

All year 9 students will have the opportunity next year to undertake the role of a Sports Leader or a Careers Leader. Students have been invited to complete an application form to register their interest, with appointments due to be made in time for the new academic year in September.

    Tutor Time Curriculum

The focus of this half-term has been 'Essential Life Skills'. Learning Mentors and Student Leaders have delivered sessions relating to topics such as Coping with Failure, Importance of Happiness, Finance Management, and Dealing with Anger. Year 9 students continue to show high levels of engagement in these sessions. Student also this half-term developed their understanding of Pride and LGBTQ+ as part of National Pride Month, where excellent maturity and respect was shown by students. Finally, as the year came to a close, students spent some time in their Colleges preparing for the eagerly anticipated and competitive Sports Day.

    Health Needs Assessment

In January this year, all Year 9 students were invited to complete a Health Needs Assessment Questionnaire which was produced by the Warwickshire School Nurse team. On the back of this, during the last half-term, some students were invited to have a 1-1 meeting with the school nurses to discuss any concerns further. To ensure all students had a thorough understanding of mental, emotional and physical health, the school nurse team delivered a one hour session to all students, where students developed their understanding of the impacts of poor health identify ways of improving wellbeing, as well as knowing where to go for help if needed.

    Sports Day

Congratulations to students who are part of Manor College for their Sports Day victory. Year 9 students conducted themselves in an exemplary fashion all day, with the vast majority of students all taking part in a sport in the morning, and some students competing in the athletics sprint events and tug of war, in pursuit of achieving points for their college in the afternoon. Whilst students were extremely competitive, it was great to see strong examples of sportsmanship and honesty between students of different colleges.

    Goodbyes and Thank You

We must say goodbye to some of our current Year 9 Learning Mentors: Miss Tyreman, who is moving on to pastures new; Mr Piper who is taking on the role of Assistant Head of Sixth Form and Head of Year 12,;and Mrs Wilson and Mrs Harding who are undertaking alternative pastoral roles within school next year. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank both Miss Tyreman, Mr Piper, Mrs Wilson and Mrs Harding for all of their hard work with their tutor groups this year – I have no doubt the pupils of 09BD01, 09CT02 and 09PK02 will miss you greatly.

The Year 9 Learning Mentor team for next academic year (Year 10) is currently being decided and there will be a few changes to the current team to account for the above, but where possible, Learning Mentors will remain with their current tutor group.

As Year 9 draws to a close, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all parents and carers for all of your support. It has been wonderful to work with you to ensure the best outcomes for your child are achieved. I wish you all a well-deserved, relaxing summer break, and I look forward to continuing to work with you next year.

    Progression Exams

The Progression Exams saw the first exam experience for the Y10 cohort. The experience of exam sessions, and the expectations needed to ensure that a fair environment is provided, is invaluable in supporting all students in doing their best.

    Rights and Responsibilities

Students have been looking at what makes social media so popular, and how it can be edited to distort our view of the world.

    Numeracy

As a school we’re keen to develop student understanding of finances, with this in mind Y10 have looked at credit scoring and how the impact mortgages.

    Work Experience

Both the external and internal work experiences were a fantastic success.

Comments for those student who completed external placements include:

    • ‘Samuel was smart and knowledgeable with a sensible attitude to work.’
    • ‘Katie did a great job. She was very willing to do tasks and did them efficiently. Her confidence in communicating really improved over the week.’
    • ‘Jamie was superb and we would have no hesitation in offering him a job in the future.’
    • ‘Rebecca was an excellent addition to the work place and we were really glad to have her around.’

The internal placements ranged from experiences of the world of work in the engineering, communication and advertising sectors. In addition, there was a day of enterprise activities as well as second day of team building experiences with the army.

    Sports Day

Tuesday 12 July marked the last sports day for Y10 as they will have left school this time next year.

They were gritty, competitive and the sports leaders endeavoured to ensure that students across all year groups got the right event.

    Rewards and celebration

The end of year Celebration Assembly is another highlight of the year, and I look forward to celebrating the achievements of the students on the last day of term, as well as thank their Learning Mentors for all their hard work over the last two years. Next year Y10 students will be working with the Y11 team of specialised Learning Mentors who are well experienced in supporting students through this important year as they prepare for the GCSE exams. All in all it has been a fantastic year for Y10 and it continues to be a real pleasure being part of their school journey.

And just like that they were in year 8! Where has the time gone?

I want to start by saying a huge thank you to all parents / carers who have supported myself and the school this year. I think it is important to acknowledge the challenges and difficulties some students may have faced when starting secondary school this year, following a significant period of learning online. As a school we have worked incredibly hard to try and support students to establish new routines and habits. I don’t think we can underestimate the effect this has had on some year 7s' resilience and perseverance. However I have to say, the majority of students have been infallible. They are polite, respectful, enthusiastic yet humble. I need to ensure that I help to instil the confidence they need to believe that they can achieve anything. I have had a superb set of Learning Mentors this year, who have supported me and the students on their journey. They have continued to promote the school ethos through the tutor curriculum as well as during structured learning conversations. It is for that reason that I believe they have a pivotal role in the outcome of our students’ attitude to learning levels, consequences as well as their academic progress.  I am extremely proud to inform you that year 7 currently have the highest number of rewards and the lowest number of consequences in the school. We have managed to exhibit tremendous team spirit in this year’s Sports Day. There are a plethora of events that have occurred this year that have made me incredibly proud to be Year 7 Leader. There are going to be some changes with regards to my team come September and I will inform you of those changes when I have had confirmation. It is the passion and determination of our students that allows me to believe that we are the leading year group at NLS.

Year 7s compete in this year’s Maths Bee

Year 7s displayed their academic flare this week by competing in this year’s Maths Bee. All year 7 students took part in a very competitive event that centred on Maths trivia. Each college demonstrated a fantastic level of team work and communication skills with Binswood winning the entire competition. The atmosphere was electric. It is very pleasing to witness such resilience and determination from my year 7s.

     Year 7 Sports Day

This year we watched Year 7s participate in an incredibly competitive whole school event. Year 7 leaders worked tirelessly to ensure that each student was signed up to an event and that they were prompt when arriving. I want to take this opportunity to commend my sports leaders for doing an incredible job of organising and assisting the pupils throughout the day. I have to say, I have never been so proud of the amount of team work and support each individual student displayed towards their college / year peers. Their motivation was inspiring, with each student determined to persevere and fight for a winning spot. It was definitely a highlight of my year and I am sure it will have been a memorable day for all students in each College. Bring on next year’s Sports Day. Year 7 Eco-Leaders

I thought this would be a great opportunity to reflect on the amount of work our year 7 Eco-Leaders have done this year to demonstrate their commitment to a global issue.

    Autumn term

Planet Super League: We affiliated with Birmingham City football club and promoted practising eco-friendly activities which were then recording on the Planet Super League website. In total, we managed to save 4131 kg of CO2 and 235 trees!

    Spring term

Great British Clean: supported the eco club in campaigning for collecting 100 bags of plastic from school site. Some also participated in litter picking after school and during tutor time!

    Summer term

The Big Plastic Count: Campaigning for and supporting Green Peace in getting as many people to sign up to counting their plastic, generating a plastic footprint which will be used when Green Peace approach the government regarding single use plastic bans in the UK.

Sunflower competition: Those eco leaders that attend eco club are running a competition where tutor groups are invited to attend eco club, plant a sunflower and then the sunflower that grows the tallest wins sweets!

Year 5 transition event – Some of the eco leaders will be running eco workshops by building hedgehog houses and planting bee friendly plants on the school site in the Summer term.

    Jubilee Competition

I could not be more proud of the number of year 7s that contributed to the whole school Jubilee Bake Off. We had over 30 year 7 entries alone. It is always really lovely to see so many of our year group dedicating time to being involved in a whole school event and raising a significant amount of money for the Prince’s Trust. I would like to congratulate Kaddy K, Lucy M and Chloe P who baked the winning cake. These students were awarded with an afternoon tea in the sunshine.

    Tutor Curriculum

Your child has had the opportunity to learn, lead and contribute to in each of the curriculum themes listed below:

Politics and Parliament, Celebrating Diversity and Equality, Relationships, Staying Safe Online and Offline, Development and Life Beyond School.

We are hoping that the information shared has helped your child stay healthy, safe and prepared for life – and work – in modern Britain.

Year 11 Students have been had opportunities to say their final goodbyes over the last few weeks. Prom and the Leavers Assembly were huge successes and I hope all students involved enjoyed themselves. A few snapshots of students arriving at the prom and having the opportunity to sign each other’s shirts on their last day in school can be seen below. Student’s behaviour was exemplary throughout both events and really highlighted what a fantastic year group they are. We also had an opportunity to celebrate individual student successes at the whole school celebration evening towards the end of term. Well done to all students who received a nomination and subsequent award winners.

    World Book Day
After many months of covid restrictions, we were finally able to put on some events to rejoice in all things English. The first was to celebrate World Book Day - a whole day dedicated to improving the lives of young people through reading and literacy. This comprised of a book swap bonanza which saw student trading books they had read, loved and were ready to pass on to another student to spread an appreciation of the written word. A huge thanks to those involved and the library for their support on the day.

    LS Summer Reading Challenge!

    Hello Year 7 and 8,

Fancy a journey into the imagination over this summer?

We have the perfect challenge for you! This summer the English department are tasking you with reading books about the following:

    1. A story that is set in a fantastical world
    2. A story about spies
    3. A story about someone whose life is different from your own
    4. A story that has been developed into a movie/television show
    5. A book with a beautiful cover
    6. An autobiography or biography about a fascinating person.

    Prizes:

    • An R1 will be awarded to everyone who takes part.
    • An R2 will be awarded to everyone who completes over half of the challenge.
    • An R3 and a postcard home will be awarded to any student who completes the challenge.

To enter: Your current English teacher will give you a sheet to fill in once you have completed each book. Hand this sheet in to your new English teacher in September.

Here are some recommendations from the English Department:

    Year 7

After their completion of the central text ‘A Monster Calls’ in our Relationships scheme, our Year 7 cohort headed into the theatre to watch the film adaptation, to further support their understanding of the plot and themes within the novel. Whilst there may not have been a dry eye in the room, with the film exploring heart-wrenching grief and loss, the story also sheds light on the importance of independent decision-making, dealing with difficult emotions and finding your voice – all of which are extremely important in our ever-changing, contemporary world.

Throughout this year, the English Department have embedded further opportunities to encourage our young people to ‘read for pleasure.’ In all of our Year 7 and Year 8 classes, we have implemented 15-minute independent reading sessions at the beginning of one English lesson per week, where students read a book that they themselves are interested in.  Whilst this has obvious benefits for students’ literacy skills, reading also significantly increases empathy, improves relationships with others and enhances one’s wellbeing throughout life. In light of this, we were thoroughly impressed by this book review of Weirdo’s War by Michael Coleman, completed within one of our reading groups!

    Year 8

During the summer term, Year 8 have been studying Jason Reynolds’ ‘Long Way Down,’ a novel exploring themes of gang violence, revenge and morality, told through contemporary prose poetry. This text broke the literary boundaries many people associate with poetry and students were thoroughly engrossed with the story and stylistic choices the poet makes throughout the novel.

Earlier this year, the English Department launched a new writing initiative: the 200-word challenge! Once per fortnight, every student in KS3 partakes in a topical writing activity which is relevant to the learning that has been taking part in their classrooms. As part of a 200-word challenge, students were given the opportunity to create their own concrete poetry based on the text. Here is one of the fabulous pieces of work that was produced for this task:

    Year 9

It has been an extremely exciting and successful term for our year 9 students, who kickstarted the summer in the theatre watching a theatre adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, which has complemented their study of work in the English curriculum, as well as prepared them further for their GCSE study of Macbeth in Year 10 and 11.

The year group have also completed an element of their GCSE Language course this term – the spoken language endorsement. Students had to choose a topic they felt passionate about, plan and write a 5 minute speech to be delivered in front of their class. Topical issues discussed included the disparity of pay between genders, the unethical nature of animal testing, and even whether pineapple belongs on pizza! This is a tricky and particularly daunting element of the course for lots of students, however, it has been lovely to see so many students grow in confidence and discovering their independent interests. Please do commend our Year 9s on their great efforts!

    Year 10

The end of the year calls for huge congratulations for this year group, as they have now completed all content for their English Literature GCSE. Over the past 18 months, these students have worked tirelessly, studying 1 prose text, 2 plays, 16 poems and an abundance of unseen poetry practice. During their progression exams, the cohort sat the longest and hardest Literature exam, which is fantastic practice for the real examinations this time next year.

The hard work does not stop there – due to COVID restrictions in the classroom, these students were unable to complete their speaking and listening endorsement last year, thus they have ended the year preparing and completing their speeches. Year 10 have worked extremely hard this year and regardless of COVID, have taken learning in their stride, and we are confident that this diligence and perseverance will contribute to their successes.

    Year 12

Our English Literature A Level group went Welsh in June, climbing The Skirrid, a mountain just outside Abergavenny which inspired the poetry book ‘Skirrid Hill’ by Owen Sheers, which they are studying. Everyone made it to the top, although with little breath left, and enjoyed the spectacular views of Wales and England either side. Whether they discovered “the answers to every question (they) have never known”, as Sheers' proclaims, you’ll have to ask them.

The group also took part in an Academic Conference at The Cotswold School this term. The purpose of the trip was to enrich students’ experience of English by having the opportunity to hear professional subject knowledge talks and engage with students who work on complimentary texts. It gave them the opportunity to gain confidence presenting their work (NEA topic), which aligns perfectly with study in Further Education. The trip was a huge success and all students involved were a huge credit to the school and themselves.

    Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award

119 students across Years 9 & 10 signed up to undertake their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award, with a fantastic 115 of those making it across the finish line by completing their qualifying expedition in the magnificent Cotswolds. We had expeditions out on weekend of Friday 8 & Saturday 9 July and Friday 15 and Saturday 16 July with routes starting in Broadway, Condicote, Sedgeberrow and Naunton - making their way to our campsite at Hayles Fruit Farm. During their expedition, our students' navigation and camp craft skills were kept under constant scrutiny by our qualified NLS DofE assessor team. There were of course one or two navigational mishaps along the way, but all groups across both weekends showed a good level of competency with all students successfully passing this element of their certificate. The energy, spirit and teamwork throughout both expeditions was a sight to behold and memories made on the expedition will last a lifetime.

To receive their bronze certificate our students will need to ensure evidence is uploaded to their eDofE account in the form of a completed assessor’s report card for each section. For troubleshooting and support with this process, please see the DofE Youtube channel or contact your DofE Leader. All units must be completed by 1 September.

    Year 9 – Mr Schofield

    Year 10 – Mr Beese

News regarding the Duke of Edinburgh Award in the 2022-23 academic year will be circulated in September.  Please see below a selection of photos from our expeditions

Under 13 Girls County Finals (Small Sided)

Congratulations to our U13 girls who qualified for and participated in the County finals small sided tournament. The finals were hosted at the fantastic Solihull Moors Damson Park Stadium, and featured the best female school football teams from across the Coventry, Warwickshire and Solihull area. After a chastening defeat in their opening game vs Stratford upon Avon School, a side that made it all the way to the National U13 girls cup semi-finals this year – our girls turned on the fireworks, winning their next 4 matches to cruise into the semi-finals. The girls would play Tutor Grange Academy in the semi-finals, and having had the better of the game – girls would bow out on penalties after the game ended 0-0.

Well done to Year 8 who have been finding out about the Transatlantic slave trade. They have produced some outstanding essays analysing the main causes of The Abolition Act, 1833.

We had a fantastic day with Frontline Living History as the Year 9 students took part in the WWI Battlefields Medicine workshop. They were able to try on the uniform, see the Thomas Splint in action and handle artefacts from the trenches.

Year 10 had had a busy half-term, preparing for their mock exams and will be ready to start their final topic, Weimar and Nazi Germany in September. Well done for all of your hard work.
