Year 7 Update - Summer 1

This term has been another extremely positive one for Year 7, and I would like to thank students for the mature and determined attitude they continue to show each day. It has been fantastic to see the excellent progress being made across subjects, with students demonstrating resilience, commitment and a strong focus on their learning. A particular highlight of the term was the successful Whitemoor Lakes residential trip, where students represented the school brilliantly, took part in a wide range of activities and strengthened their teamwork and independence.
Behaviour for learning remains a real strength within the year group, and staff continue to comment on the positive atmosphere in lessons and the respectful way students conduct themselves around school. We have also been pleased to see increasing numbers of students taking part in extra-curricular activities, enrichment opportunities and wider school events, helping to further strengthen our school community.
Tutor Time
Students continue to engage positively with our Tutor Time Curriculum, contributing thoughtfully to discussions and demonstrating maturity during a range of important topics. This half term, the PSHE focus has been Essential Life Skills, with students taking part in sessions exploring Growth Mindset, Resilience, Positive Role Models and a thought-provoking Money vs. Happiness debate. Students have also spent time reflecting on and analysing their Data 2 reports, identifying strengths and setting clear targets to help them further improve over the remainder of the year.
Next half term, the Tutor Time PSHE focus will be Body Confidence, with sessions covering Personal Hygiene, Mental Health, and the emotional and physical changes linked to puberty. Students will also take part in activities celebrating National Pride Month, alongside the final instalment of our Digital Literacy programme, continuing to support students in becoming confident, respectful and informed young people.
NLS College Cup
This half term we have launched our new College Cup competition, which has been introduced to students through tutor time and assemblies.
It encompasses all of the College events and scoring systems that we run in school. The College Cup is designed to celebrate and reward positive contribution, teamwork, and our CORE values across a wide range of areas including rewards, attendance, punctuality, charity events, competitions, Sports Day, and more. Students have fed back to us that they want to feel more involved in their Colleges, and the College Cup will give them the perfect opportunity to do so. With so many ways to contribute, every student can play a part.
NLS Attendance World Cup 2026
Next half term, we are launching the NLS Attendance World Cup — an exciting new attendance competition inspired by this summer’s international football tournament. Building on the fantastic success of our recent Winning Streak initiative, we want to keep the momentum going and continue celebrating excellent attendance across the school.
Every tutor group will compete as part of the tournament, with tutor groups split into two groups within each year group. Weekly attendance scores will determine league positions during the opening “group stage”, with the top four tutor groups from each group progressing to the knockout quarter-finals.
From there, it’s all to play for as tutor groups battle through the semi-finals and into the grand final to be crowned NLS Attendance World Cup 2026 Champions!
The challenge is designed to encourage strong routines and consistent attendance throughout the term, whilst adding a fun and competitive element linked to the excitement of the World Cup. Every week matters, and every day in school could make the difference between progressing or being knocked out of the competition. As an added incentive, the winning tutor groups will receive a Pizza Party during tutor time to celebrate their achievement.
We are looking forward to seeing which tutor groups rise to the challenge and whether your child’s tutor can go all the way to lift the trophy!
Student Leadership Opportunities
We are delighted to share some exciting developments regarding student leadership opportunities. Congratulations to Claudia and David, who have been appointed as our new Senior Student Leaders, you can read more about them and their role further down in this bulletin in the Student Leadership section. We would also like to congratulate all students who have successfully secured positions as Assistant Senior Student Leaders across our different leadership strand.
In early June, leadership opportunities will open to students across the rest of the school, giving even more students the chance to play an active role within our school community. Students in Year 7 will be able to apply for leadership positions as School Ambassadors, and linked to our International School’s status.
We strongly encourage as many students as possible to take part and contribute their ideas, energy and enthusiasm to school life. Leadership roles provide a fantastic opportunity for students to develop confidence, teamwork and communication skills, whilst making a positive difference within our community.
When we return in September, applications will also open for Subject Student Leaders. We wish all students the very best of luck with their applications and encourage everyone to get involved and help shape the future of our school community.
Transition Leaders
Since their appointment last term, our Year 7 Transition leaders have been meeting fortnightly to prepare for the range of transition events that take place at this time, supporting Year 6 students move from Primary to Secondary life at NLS. Leaders initially spent time discussing the skills and attributes that are required to support Year 6 to ensure they feel welcomed and happy as soon as possible. Leaders are encouraged to consider how they can be good role models for the new students and develop independence by ensuring they check the notice board for updates. Transition leaders then support the transition team with any of the following events: enhanced transition sessions, transition day, get to know NLS sessions, primary school visits, and help settle students in September.
Reward Points
I am incredibly proud of the excellent conduct, positive behaviour and mature attitude that our Year 7 students continue to demonstrate each day around school. It is fantastic to see this recognised so consistently by staff and reflected in the huge number of reward points awarded throughout the year.
In fact, the current Year 7 cohort has achieved the highest number of reward points at this stage of the academic year since our Go4Schools records began — an outstanding achievement. A huge well done to all of our Year 7 students for their continued efforts and commitment.
With one more half term remaining, there is still plenty of time for students to continue earning reward points and secure an invitation to the Summer Rewards Event next half term.
Below are the top 10 highest reward earners this half term, all of whom should feel extremely proud of their efforts.

As we approach the final half term of the academic year, I continue to be incredibly proud of the positive contributions Year 7 students make each day and the enthusiasm they show for school life at NLS. It is important that students continue to maintain the high standards we expect, particularly in relation to uniform, behaviour and attitude towards learning, so that we finish the year strongly together.
There is still plenty for students to look forward to over the coming weeks, including exciting events such as the Year 7 Maths Bee, the Summer Music Concert on Tuesday 7 July, and our whole-school Sports Day on Tuesday 14 July.
I would like to thank parents and carers for their continued support and encouragement throughout the year so far.
