Year 11 Update - Autumn 1

As we come to the end of our first half term, I wanted to share an update on how positively Year 11 have begun what is undoubtedly a significant and memorable year in their school journey. It has been encouraging to see so many students approach the new academic year with purpose, determination and a growing awareness of the opportunities and responsibilities that come with being in Year 11.
The GCSE year brings its own challenges, but it also offers students the chance to demonstrate how far they have developed, take greater ownership of their learning and make the most of the support available to them. Across the school, our students are already showing many of the qualities that will help them succeed.
Our CORE Values of Commitment, Opportunity, Respect and Excellence remain central to everything we do. It has been pleasing to see these values reflected in students' approach to their studies, their relationships with others and their contributions to the wider school community.
A Positive Start to Year 11
The first half term has provided a valuable opportunity for students to establish routines, strengthen their learning habits and focus on the important year ahead. Staff have been encouraged by the positive attitudes demonstrated by many students in lessons, particularly their willingness to engage with challenging material, respond to feedback and work towards improving their understanding.
Year 11 is about much more than preparing for examinations. It is also a time for students to demonstrate maturity, support their peers and make a positive contribution to school life. Whether through taking on additional responsibilities, participating in events or helping to create a positive environment for others, our students have an important role to play in setting the tone for the rest of the school.
As we move into the next half term, the challenge is to maintain this momentum, build consistency and ensure that every student makes the most of the opportunities ahead.
DTTR – Diagnose, Therapy, Test, Review
DTTR continues to provide an important structure for targeted learning and academic development across a number of Year 11 subjects. The approach is designed to help students recognise what they know, identify areas that require further attention and take practical steps towards improving their performance.
Through the four stages of Diagnose, Therapy, Test and Review, students can identify gaps in their knowledge, revisit challenging concepts, practise applying their understanding and assess the progress they have made.
These sessions are particularly valuable as students move closer to their GCSE examinations. They encourage a more independent approach to learning, helping students understand that progress comes not simply from completing work, but from recognising mistakes, addressing misconceptions and acting on feedback.
Students are encouraged to engage fully with these opportunities and approach each session with a clear focus. The more effectively they use this time, the better equipped they will be to tackle the demands of their examinations with confidence.
Mock Examinations – Learning, Reflection and Progress
Year 11 have completed their first set of mock examinations this week, and I would like to commend them for the exemplary behaviour and mature attitude they demonstrated throughout this important period. They approached their exams with focus, respect and a clear understanding of the significance of these assessments as they prepare for their summer GCSEs.
Mock examinations are an important part of the Year 11 journey. They give students the opportunity to experience formal examination conditions, apply their knowledge under timed conditions and gain a clearer understanding of what they need to do to achieve their potential.
Just as importantly, the value of a mock examination extends beyond the grade achieved. The feedback students receive can help them identify strengths, address areas of uncertainty and refine their revision strategies in preparation for the summer examination series.
Prom 2027 – Looking Ahead to the Celebrations
Although the summer may still feel some way off, it is important that Year 11 students have positive milestones to look forward to alongside their academic commitments.
I am delighted to confirm that our Year 11 Celebration Assembly and Prom will take place on Friday 2 July 2027. These special events will provide an opportunity to recognise the achievements, friendships and memories that have shaped students' time at school. The Celebration Assembly will allow us to reflect on individual journeys and celebrate the contributions students have made to our school community, while the Prom will provide a memorable opportunity for everyone to come together and celebrate the end of their secondary school journey.
As in previous years, we want students to recognise that attending these celebrations is a privilege linked to the standards they maintain throughout Year 11. Students are expected to demonstrate consistent commitment to their learning and uphold our school expectations in the months ahead.
Eligibility to attend the celebrations will be linked to students maintaining appropriate standards in the following areas:
- Attendance and punctuality: attending school regularly and arriving on time.
- Behaviour and conduct: making positive choices, treating others with respect and following school expectations.
- Effort and engagement: demonstrating commitment to learning and making the most of revision and support opportunities.
- Our CORE Values: consistently demonstrating Commitment, Opportunity, Respect and Excellence in everyday school life.
We want every student to have the opportunity to celebrate their achievements with their peers, and we will continue to support and encourage them to make positive choices throughout the year. The message is clear: the standards students demonstrate every day matter, and maintaining these expectations will help ensure that the end-of-year celebrations are a fitting reward for their hard work and commitment.
Further information about the arrangements, timings and venue will be shared with parents and carers in due course. We look forward to celebrating the Year 11 cohort's achievements together in July.
Whole-School Events
Year 11 students are an important part of our wider school community, and participation in whole-school events provides valuable opportunities to demonstrate generosity, compassion and a sense of responsibility beyond the classroom.
Race for Life – A Fantastic Whole-School Effort
On 25 September, our school community came together for our annual Race for Life event, and what a brilliant afternoon it was! It was wonderful to see so many students embracing the challenge, showing determination and supporting one another throughout the event. Many students recorded personal bests, demonstrating real resilience and a willingness to push themselves to achieve their goals.
Alongside the individual achievements, the generosity of our school community was truly outstanding. Thanks to the efforts of our students, families and staff, we raised an incredible £2,660 in support of this important cause.
This event was a fantastic example of our CORE Values in action, particularly Commitment, Respect and Excellence. We are immensely proud of everyone who took part, contributed donations or helped make the afternoon such a success. Thank you to all those who played a part in making a real difference.
World Mental Health Day – Hello Yellow
On Friday 9 October, we marked World Mental Health Day by taking part in Hello Yellow, bringing our school community together to raise awareness of the importance of young people's mental health and wellbeing.
It was wonderful to see so many students showing their support by wearing an item of yellow, helping to brighten up the school and demonstrate their commitment to this important cause. The day was also made extra special by a cake sale at breaktime, which proved a fantastic opportunity for students and staff to come together, enjoy a treat and contribute to fundraising efforts.
Beyond the fundraising itself, the day served as an important reminder that mental health matters and that talking openly, looking out for one another and knowing when to seek support can make a real difference. We want all our students to feel that they are listened to, valued and supported, and that asking for help is always a positive step.
A huge thank you to everyone who donated cakes, contributed to the sale or took part in Hello Yellow. The enthusiasm and generosity shown by our school community were fantastic, and we are proud to continue promoting kindness, compassion and positive mental wellbeing across the school.
Thank you to everyone who has contributed to these initiatives. The willingness of students, families and staff to support causes that make a difference is something we should all be proud of.
Rewards and Recognition
Recognising effort, achievement and positive contributions is an important part of our school culture, and it is always rewarding to see Year 11 students receiving recognition for the ways in which they contribute to school life.
Reward points celebrate a wide range of positive behaviours, from commitment to learning and responding constructively to feedback to involvement in enrichment opportunities, leadership and acts of kindness towards others.
As the year progresses, we will continue to celebrate students who demonstrate our CORE Values and set positive examples for those around them. These achievements are worth recognising because they reflect the habits and attitudes that help individuals and communities thrive.

Student Leadership
Our Year 11 student leaders play a valuable role in supporting College activities as Deputy College Leaders. They contribute to whole-school events and helping to organise important milestones such as the Prom and Yearbook. These responsibilities allow students to develop confidence, communication skills, teamwork and a greater sense of ownership of their school community.
We are proud of those who have stepped forward to take on these roles and look forward to seeing the positive difference they make throughout the year.
Leadership is not limited to students with a formal title, however. Everyday actions such as encouraging others, demonstrating respect, taking responsibility and helping someone who is struggling can be just as influential. We encourage all Year 11 students to consider the example they set and the contribution they can make.

As we reach the end of this first half term, I would like to congratulate Year 11 on the progress they have made in establishing themselves for the year ahead. There is much to look forward to, but we must also recognise the importance of the months ahead and the part that consistent effort will play in students' eventual success.
Over the coming half term, I encourage students to remain focused in lessons, attend school regularly and punctually, make effective use of revision opportunities and respond positively to the guidance and feedback provided by their teachers. Small, consistent actions can make a significant difference, and it is important that students recognise the value of the work they do each day.
I would also like to thank you, as parents and carers, for the support and encouragement you provide at home. Working together is essential in helping students manage the demands of Year 11, maintain their confidence and make informed decisions about their next steps. Your continued partnership with the school is greatly appreciated.
I look forward to sharing further updates and celebrating the achievements of our Year 11 students as the year progresses.
With my best wishes
Alan Boyes
