Head Teacher's Message

Dear Parents/Carers,

A year ago today I wrote closing the term in the midst of a very different Christmas scene. We had fully returned to school however main events such as the Winter Concert were postponed, face coverings, mass testing and restricted practices were back or on the horizon once again. Whilst seasonal illnesses have most definitely affected many this December, school has felt a far more hopeful and happy place as we head into the festive break, looking forward to the time we can spend with friends and family. We can see smiling faces, interact with each other so much more easily and focus more intently on the business of education and school life.

Please do take time to look at the wonderful articles included in this terms bulletin, the Winter Concert was a lovely reminder of the importance of shared experiences and when given opportunity what heights our young people can reach. The performances across a wide range of musical genres where brilliant -  well done to all who performed.

A further well done to all students who took part in the Student Leadership training this term. Its brilliant to see students supporting one another and helping drive continual improvements within our school community. The College Sports weeks, National Anti-Bullying activities, Careers Fair and Christmas Hamper Appeal were just a few of the excellent wider curricular aspects this term that compliment subject curriculum delivery.

I do hope you have a great break as a family and we look forward to welcoming all students back in the New Year.

Have a great Christmas and New Year.

Mike Lowdell

This term saw our first College Fortnight of the academic year. The aim of this fortnight is to focus on our fantastic College system, enabling students to come together in their College communities.

This term students attended a College assembly and had the opportunity to watch and participate in sporting events.

It was really lovely to see the number of students that joined their College to watch the first England game in the World Cup, here at school, in one of the five College venues we set up.

Students also had the opportunity to take part in, and support, the College Football and Netball tournaments.  Our Year 10 Sports Leaders were tasked to put teams together for their College.  The results are below.

Well Done to everyone who took part, the events were well supported and it was great to see the students enjoy representing their College as well as demonstrating excellent sportsmanship.  It’s really important that students work together and mix between Year groups within our College structure

There will be three College fortnights per academic year where students will take part in a range of events, including sports and quizzes.

On a rainy Wednesday morning on the 23rd November, Year 11 Geographers visited Birmingham city centre to complete fieldwork.

By the time we arrived at our first destination of Brindley Place the rain luckily cleared, other sites visited the course of the day were the Library, Grand Central Station and the Bullring.

At each site visited students collected data in order to evaluate the success that urban regeneration has brought to the city. The data collection involved students completing methods such as fieldsketches and environmental quality surveys, and it was really pleasing to see how  well they completed this and how sensibly and politely students braved asking members of the public a questionnaire.

Year 11 are now busy following up the fieldtrip in lessons.

Year 7 students in German have been learning about Indonesian culture as part of our International Schools commitment. Indonesia has a rich heritage of oral storytelling. In the past people would gather round in a circle each night to listen to the local storyteller. One common approach that is still used today to tell stories in Indonesia is Wayang. This is a form of puppet  theatre where a story is told using shadow puppets against a cloth screen that is lit from behind by a coconut oil lamp.

Students were challenged to make authentic Indonesian or Halloween puppets, which would then have short conversations in German. This included greeting each other, asking their names and how they were feeling and finally, saying goodbye to each puppet. This repetition, alongside fun and creativity provides an excellent opportunity for retention of language and improves their oracy skills.

Students responded with great enthusiasm and effort to make a wonderful variety of puppets and were able to converse in German beautifully with confidence. One student created a lit theatre for his puppet and received an R3.

This term in Astronomy Club, students have bearning about the meaning of Astronomy and its four distinct branches: astrophysics, astrobiology, astrogeology and astronometry. They have created detailed posters and presentations to explain each of these branches.
These posters are now a part of our growing noticeboard in the laboratories.

We have also researched famous astronomers and their findings. Students did an amazing job investigating and delivering presentations about notable scientists such as: Isaac Newton, Nicolaus Copernicus, Henrietta Swann Leavitt, Galileo Galilei, Erastothenes, Johannes Kepler, Christiaan Huygens, Annie Jump Cannon and many more.

On Tuesday 6th December we learned about an upcoming phenomenon of Mars opposition to the Sun and being able to observe an almost perfect alignment of the Sun, the Earth, the Moon and Mars, which took place on Wednesday 7th December.

The Astronomy Club will continue after the break with many more engaging activities, from making and launching rockets, to making and using telescopes!

Year7 students have had a fantastic start to Science Club this term – looking at everything from eye dissections to holograms, coloured fire and egg parachutes, and even a Christmas-themed investigation to help Mrs Claus!

The Science Department look forward to welcoming our next bunch of enthusiastic Scientists next term – keep an eye out in the Tutor Time Bulletin

Ice safety messages and resource from Warwickshire Fire & Rescue Service

Following the tragic incident in Solihull where four children fell through ice on a lake, Warwickshire Fire & Rescue Service (WFRS) would like to reiterate some key safety messages for spending time near water in icy conditions.

This article - https://bit.ly/ice-safety-wfrs - details the advice from WFRS for avoiding incidents, as well as what to do if something goes wrong.

In addition, this resource from the RLSS - https://bit.ly/rlss-ice-safety - can be used to help educate children about the dangers associated with icy water, an essential part of keeping them safe.

We hope you find this information useful.
