Intent

Through Geography at North Leamington School our students will develop a growing understanding of the world. As a result it will help them make better sense of the world and prepare them to play an active role as informed, responsible citizens. It aims to instil a sense of wonder and curiosity about the world around us where physical and human geography are so closely interlinked. With this understanding students will more successfully navigate their world from both the past, the present and future and through considering topical issues from different points of view they will be able to put themselves in “somebody else’s shoes”. Students will also learn about similarities, differences and diversity between locations and how we live in an interdependent world.

A broad, vibrant and dynamic curriculum is delivered through the key stages where fieldwork skills in differing locations are developed. There are enquiry based topics in Year 7, 8 and 9 where the curriculum is scaffolded to build upon geographical skills, knowledge and understanding through the study of locations at different spatial scales. Moving into years 10 and 11 students have the opportunity to choose GCSE Geography and/or BTEC level 2 in Travel and Tourism. In Geography students will explore both UK and global locations and explore issues from the perspective of different stakeholders, they will therefore become more critical thinkers and problem-solvers. In Travel and Tourism students will develop knowledge and transferable skills based on an industry that is dynamic and a significant employer across the world. They will develop key skills by exploring the aims of different travel and tourism organisations, the features of tourist destinations, how organisations meet customer requirements, and the influences on global travel and tourism. Through doing so students passion for exploring new destinations will be ignited and provides exciting opportunities to learn more about the world we live in.

In Year 12 and 13 A Level Geography students continue to develop their understanding of physical and human geography from a local through to a global scale whilst unpicking the debates surrounding contemporary challenges facing the world today. They become more independent learners through the completion of an independent investigation within which they formulate a relevant title of their choice. They will also develop skills valuable to the work place and as a global citizen, for example research and analytical skills by exploring and questioning the world around them, report writing skills which include active research in the field as well as analysis and interpretation of both numerical and qualitative information in order to reach conclusions.
