This qualification aims to provide an introduction to the sector and is for students interested in learning about the health and social care sector as part of a balanced study programme. It is intended as an Applied General qualification. It supports access to a range of higher education courses, possibly in health and social care. No prior study of the sector is needed. 

How is the course organised and assessed?

Our Extended Certificate course is made up of four units over 2 years of study. These units are: Unit 10 — Sociological Perspectives (Coursework), Unit 1 — Human Lifespan Development (exam), both of which will be taken in Year 12, and Unit 5 — Meeting individual care and support needs (Coursework), and Unit 2 — Working in Health and Social Care (exam) which will be taken in Year 13. The marks for this course are 58% from exams, and 42% from coursework.

What's next?

Health and Social Care leads well into a wide range of degree programmes including: Nursing, Primary Education, Sports Science, and Social Work. It also supports Students who wish to go directly into employment as the transferable knowledge, understanding, and skills will give successful students an advantage in applying for a range of entry level jobs.
