Extra-curricular activities

We have a wide range of extra-curricular clubs available to our students. Please see below details of the extra-curricular opportunities we offer. 

 

 

Art Club
Year Group

When: Thursday after school 3.15 - 4.00pm

An opportunity for Year 7 and Year 8 students to develop their art and design skills with a range of activities linked to seasonal or current events.
Past projects include, self-portraits inspired by Van Gogh, creating your own coat of arms and designing sugar skull masks.
The sessions are designed to encourage the participants to explore a range of art materials and themes to enrich their art and design experience.


Arts and Crafts Club

If you are interested in all things creative, at Arts and Crafts Club, you can do a range of different crafts such as Macrame plant & jewellery holders, Tie-Dye shirts and shoe laces and Origame.  There are plenty of chances to put forward your ideas on what to do next too.

Astronomy Club

This is an opportunity to engage in and enjoy Astronomy activities including: charting the constellation, the history of astronomy, making your own telescope, using a real telescope, making your own solar system model and a trip to Jodrell Observatory and more!


Christian Club

A place where Christians or those wanting to learn about Christianity can come to share, socialise, learn and be with other Christians.
All welcome from Year 7 up to Year 13.


Computing Club

Location: S218 With: My Sycamore
When: Thursday  Week 2 after school 3.15 - 4.15pm ( for this half term only it will run on 16 November - after Christmas it will be back to every other week ) 

If you are interested in computing and would like to complete some activities including: programming,  programming physical devices , lego mindstorms, microbits, computational thinking, independent work  and competitions to enter then pop along to S218 after school on Thursdays. The club is for any age group.

Computing Club for Girls

When: Fridays  Week 1 after school 3.15 - 4.15pm - Week 1 (for this half term only it will run on 10 November and the 24 November -  after Christmas it will be back to every other week ) 

An opportunity to develop your programming,  have a go at programming physical devices, lego and gaming. There will also be competitions to enter then pop along to S218 after school on Fridays. The club is for all interested female students


Computer Science GCSE Support Session

Creative Writing Club

A great opportunity for any new or already budding writers  to take part in creative writing workshops with special guests working towards national competitions and develop their new and existing writing pieces with their peers. Students can begin to break the boundaries of creative writing through contemporary forms such as art and concrete poetry, asemic writing and sentence stories. 


Dance Club

Dance club involves learning routines in a variety of styles including contemporary, jazz and commercial and also working on dance technique.
As we approach March, Dance club will be preparing to perform a routine in our annual Dance Recital where students will get to perform in front of an audience and showcase what they have been working on.


Drama Leaders Training

The Drama Leader Training is for Drama Leaders to plan their Leadership Project and prepare for leading VIBE Drama Club. 


ARTS Award - Drama Leaders

The opportunity to study for the Arts Award - there are two levels Bronze & Silver Arts Awards.
At Bronze level, young people take an active part in the arts as well as experiencing the Arts as audience members. They create personal arts portfolios in the format of their choice to record their experiences, including research into an artist they admire and sharing their skills with others. They collect and record evidence of everything they do along the way.

At Silver Arts Award level, young people will complete two units – Unit 1 Arts Practice and Unit 2 Arts Leadership.

An Arts Award will involve students planning and completing an Arts Challenge chosen by themselves. They will find out more about your Art form by attending and reviewing Art events, researching artists or arts organisations and delivering Arts leadership project. Student need to plan their work with their Arts Award Adviser and keep a record by creating an Arts Award portfolio.


English GCSE Support Session

All Year 11s are welcome to come along to one of the English after-school revision sessions, which are taking place until the Christmas holiday. Each session will focus on a specific topic on English Literature to help students prepare for theri forthcoming exams. There will also be a series of masterclass sessions to further challenge understanding of these texts, which will be hosted by Mr Hoskin.

Steel Band

The ‘Steel Band’ is the most recently offered extra-curricular music opportunity and it has quickly become very popular.  It’s a great opportunity for students to have fun, learn a new skill and for some, to continue their musical journey from primary school.  We have seen great enthusiasm in this club for the  steel pans and are preparing music for the summer concert.


String Group

Great opportunity for any students who play violin, viola or cello instruments. You will be playing music as part of a big group and It doesn't matter how experienced you are, all music will be made to suit your current level of ability.

The Wind Band offers challenge and enjoyment for wind instrument players. This is a great opportunity to experience performing with an ensemble, prepare for school concerts and participate in performances in the local community.

Pride Society

Run by our Sixth Form Students  come and express yourself, meet and socialise with like-minded people. We will discuss current topics in and around the community, complete projects, journaling,  and look at resources and art created by and for LGBT+ people.
With the support of staff, the club also organises events for Pride every year and puts together their own information during LGBT History Month.


Psychology Club

Run by our Sixth Form Students  come and gain an insight into what Psychology is all about. Open to all year groups, you will look at exciting theories and conduct experiments based on psychological theory for example, can chocolate really improve our mood?

An opportunity to engage in some exciting experiments that you will not do in the classroom! The weekly sessions are all hands-on fun -  mixing ingredients, making holograms, dissections, parachutes, the list goes on! Come and have fun after school with your favourite science teachers!


Science Journal Club

Meet to discuss scientific articles that are linked to A Level Biology, Chemistry and Physics. We will look at articles on related topics such as medicine or sport, depending on what is of interest and use to the students who join.
The aim will be to help students with reading around the subject for their A Level courses and to give students a space to find out more about topics that interest them. It will also help to prepare students for the level of scientific literacy needed to study a science at university or work in a scientific field.


Sports Writing Club

Students can express their passion and love for a range of sports known and unknown. Students will workshop and develop their new and existing writing skills with their peers and begin to break the boundaries of sports writing through a diverse range of forms such as articles, match-reports, interviews, and fictional pieces. This is a great opportunity for any new or already budding sports writers willing to share their enthusiasm!

Clubs are run by our PE team and also some other members of the NLS teaching team. We believe that extracurricular sport promotes and helps to develop a wide range of essential life skills such as team work, resilience, problem-solving, communication and leadership to name a few alongside developing their practical sporting ability.

The extra-curricular sporting clubs range from individual sports to team sports. All clubs are free to attend and are non-committal – you can attend as many or as little sports clubs as you like to find out the activities that you enjoy.

VIBE Drama Club

VIBE Drama Club starts after October half term. We will develop confidence and resilience with Drama Games, Drama Skills and Drama Strategies to build on what has been learnt in Drama lessons as well as new skills such as Mask Making and exploring Practitioners.


Warhammer Club

This is for students of any age who already paint or play Warhammer or who are interested in doing so. The club is a place for students to build, paint, and play Warhammer together.Warhammer can help young people to develop skills in arts, engineering, and strategic thinking.
